Plume is inspired by an article in a 1945 issue of Notes Africaines about the discovery of a feral child in the Sahara desert.

The boy claimed to have been protected by an ostrich flock for ten years until his rescue. Plume imagines the consciousness of such a boy—drifting between the human and animal realms but belonging to neither.
